Excitement Builds for the 2024 Home Run Derby in Arlington
Anticipation is mounting as the 2024 Home Run Derby is set to electrify fans at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The iconic event, a staple of Major League Baseball's All-Star festivities, is scheduled for Monday, July 15, at 8 p.m. ET. Baseball enthusiasts are gearing up for an unforgettable evening as eight of the league's most powerful hitters step into the batter's box to showcase their long-ball prowess.
This year's Derby will follow an engaging format where all eight participants compete head-to-head in the first round. Each slugger will have three minutes or up to 40 pitches, whichever comes first, to swing for the fences, with one strategic timeout allowed. The four top home run hitters will then advance to the semifinals, determined by the longest home run in the event of a tie. Adding to the excitement, each player will earn three bonus outs after the initial timeframe and can secure a fourth bonus out by hitting a 425-foot homer during the bonus time.
The suspense intensifies in the semifinal round, which features head-to-head matchups among the top four hitters. Eventually, the final showdown will come down to two heavyweights, with a reduced time limit of two minutes or 27 pitches to crown the ultimate champion. The player with the most home runs in the finals will walk away with the coveted title.
Among the confirmed participants is Gunnar Henderson, who was the first to commit to the competition on June 30. Alex Bohm joined the lineup on July 5, adding further excitement. Pete Alonso, a seasoned Derby contender, is also slated to participate. Alonso, who has already won the event in 2019 and 2021, will be making his fifth appearance based on what promises to be another thrilling performance. Having been selected for his fourth career All-Star Game, Alonso’s consistent power-hitting makes him a fan favorite.
Teoscar Hernández has also shown interest in participating, adding another potential powerhouse to the roster. Conversely, some notable players have opted out of this year's competition. Aaron Judge, who last participated and won in 2017, has decided not to join the 2024 lineup. "No, not this year," said Juan Soto, the 2022 Home Run Derby champion, confirming his decision to skip the event. Yordan Alvarez has also chosen to sit out, alongside Shohei Ohtani, who is currently recovering from elbow surgery performed in September 2023. "I'm in the middle of my rehab progression, so it's not going to look like I'll be participating," Ohtani remarked.
