Charlotte, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers are set to call Charlotte home for the foreseeable future, courtesy of a groundbreaking decision by the Charlotte City Council. On Monday night, the council approved an extensive $800 million stadium renovation plan in partnership with the Panthers, ensuring the team's presence in the city for the next 20 years.
City Council Approves $800 Million Renovation Plan
In a vote that underscored both conviction and contention, the Charlotte City Council passed the renovation proposal by a 7-3 margin. The plan commits the city to a $650 million expenditure, funded by existing hospitality and tourism tax resources, while Panthers owner David Tepper will contribute the remaining $150 million upfront. Tepper, who has already poured over $117 million into stadium upgrades, has also agreed to potentially cover an additional $421 million in overages for capital improvements.
A Preemptive and Economic Investment
Despite the Panthers' on-field struggles since Tepper acquired the team in 2018 – accumulating a record of 31-68 and cycling through six head coaches – the council's decision to advance the investment emphasizes their resolve to keep the Panthers rooted in Charlotte. The franchise finished with a league-worst 2-15 record last season, yet the council remains undeterred, perceiving the renovation as both a preemptive measure to retain the team and a strategic investment in the local economy.

Former Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart urged the community to "embrace this opportunity to let the Queen City shine brighter even more so than it did in 2015," referring to the Panthers' Super Bowl run that year.
