Philadelphia Eagles' Mekhi Becton: A Valuable Addition to the Offensive Line

The Philadelphia Eagles made a notable move recently by signing offensive lineman Mekhi Becton, a strategic addition that exhibits the dynamic nature of NFL roster management. Initially brought in as a swing tackle for starters Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, Becton's versatility has quickly become invaluable to the team.

Adjusting to New Roles

In a roster already boasting impressive depth, Becton’s ability to adapt has been tested early. An ankle injury to Tyler Steen created a void at the starting right guard position, prompting Becton's quick transition during practice sessions.

During his first practice with the first team, Becton assumed the right guard position and showcased his capability by neutralizing Jalen Carter in 11-on-11 drills. This performance did not go unnoticed by Eagles coach Nick Sirianni, who noted, "I'm looking forward to that. Mekhi has had a good camp so far and looking forward to getting him some work next to Lane [Johnson] and continuing to work forward with that."

Injury and Integration

The road to integration wasn't immediate for Becton, who didn’t participate in the early days of training camp. Despite this, Becton maintained engagement by learning from his teammates and absorbing the playbook's intricacies. His sidelined days were far from idle; they were an opportunity for deeper understanding, a sentiment echoed in his self-motivated approach. “I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready. If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready,” Becton affirmed.

Landon Dickerson, the Eagles' left guard, also spoke highly of Becton’s adaptability and willingness to switch positions when required. "I think Mekhi is doing great. He's had to bounce around a few positions. We had some guys get banged up. Nothing different than what happens during the season, right?” Dickerson highlighted the unpredictable nature of an NFL season, appreciating Becton’s readiness for various roles, adding, "We have a guy that can swing at both guard and tackle, can play both guard spots. That's a lot of value in the NFL. He’s able to play four out of five positions."

Team Dynamics and Future Impact

Becton’s integration with the squad revealed more than just on-field potential; it illustrated his capacity to be a supportive teammate. His influence wasn't limited to his physical presence during practice but extended to mentoring others. “The first few days he wasn't practicing, but he was definitely in my ear the whole time and telling me what I was doing wrong. He's been a great help," said Mekhi Becton, reflecting on the guidance he received from teammates.

The Eagles have yet to disclose the duration of Tyler Steen’s absence, but Becton's preparedness ensures that the offensive line maintains its robustness. Coach Sirianni's and Dickerson’s comments underline the team’s confidence in Becton’s diverse skill set and his ability to contribute effectively, whether as a starter or a backup.

As training camp progresses, Becton's role within the Eagles' second-team offensive line further solidifies. His comprehensive understanding of multiple positions, coupled with his proactive mindset, positions him as a critical asset moving forward. The adaptability and determination Becton exhibits are qualities that fortify the Eagles' offensive line, promising resilience and flexibility as they gear up for the challenges ahead.
