Awards and Recognitions in the PWHL

The Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) shone brightly this season as several players and coaches earned accolades for their outstanding performances. Among them, Toronto’s Natalie Spooner emerged as a double honoree, being named both the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Forward of the Year.

Natalie Spooner: MVP and Forward of the Year

Natalie Spooner's accomplishments this season are nothing short of remarkable. Leading the league with 20 goals and seven assists, she demonstrated an unparalleled level of skill and determination. Spooner outperformed New York’s Alex Carpenter and Montreal’s Marie-Philip Poulin, both of whom are formidable competitors.

Spooner's journey to this pinnacle was fraught with personal and professional challenges. Notably, she gave birth to her son at the end of 2022 and did not skate for six months leading up to the season. Despite these significant hurdles, she returned to the ice with a formidable impact. However, her season was not without setbacks, as she suffered a knee injury during the playoff semifinals.

Spooner herself is taken aback by the trajectory of her season. "I probably wouldn't have thought that it would have gone this way," she admitted. "I think I was just super grateful to be playing again, to be back on the team. I was just really excited to get back out there with the girls, but I never thought that I'd be able to have, I guess, as big of an impact as I was able to have with the team."

Coach of the Year: Troy Ryan

Toronto's success is not solely attributed to Spooner. Coach Troy Ryan was named Coach of the Year after leading the team to an impressive league-high of 47 points during the regular season. Ryan orchestrated an 11-game win streak, showcasing his strategic acumen and ability to inspire his players.

Outstanding Players Across the League

The league saw numerous other standout performances. Kristen Campbell was named Goaltender of the Year, a well-deserved recognition given her 16 wins and three shutouts. Campbell's reliability between the pipes provided a solid foundation for her team’s success.

Montreal’s Erin Ambrose earned the title of Defender of the Year, accumulating an impressive 18 points over 24 games. Ambrose's defensive prowess and offensive contributions were pivotal in her team’s performance.

In a season teeming with fresh talent, Minnesota’s Grace Zumwinkle was named Rookie of the Year. With 19 points in 24 games, Zumwinkle showcased her potential and marked herself as a future star of the league.

Special Recognition: Maureen Murphy

Beyond the rink, Maureen Murphy was honored with the Hockey for All Award for her exceptional volunteer work. This accolade highlights the importance of community involvement and the positive impact players can have off the ice.

Selection Process

The distinguished winners were chosen by an 18-member selection committee. Their decisions reflect a comprehensive evaluation of performance, sportsmanship, and contributions to the sport.

This season's awards and recognitions celebrate the extraordinary talents and efforts of individuals who have not only excelled in their athletic endeavors but also inspired their peers and the next generation of players. As the league continues to grow, these honorees set the standard for excellence both on and off the ice.
